Dining Snippets: FAT x The Dessert Kitchen x Tori Tori

FAT

Dining in Locavore always requires a conscientious choice as one is subjecting one's self to what is guaranteed to be a rich, indulgent, and delicious dining experience that would surely spike up one’s cholesterol (just thinking about the Oyster and Lechon Sisig makes my heart race)! In FAT, it seems that this celebration of heart-attack indulgence is further celebrated.

DUCK BURGER (P550)

I’m not a fan of burgers, but the sight of FAT’s Duck Burger definitely made me drool. Its burger displayed beautiful layers of a thick juicy duck patty sandwiched in melted gruyere and emmenthal, and topped with a luscious sizable serving of foie gras. What I loved about is was that despite its use of heavy-set ingredients, its taste was restrained and well-balanced. A tangy pickled salad of red onions, cucumbers, and oranges is served on the side to provide a change in flavor. The best realization? They definitely know how to do their fries!

THE DESSERT KITCHEN

After introducing to us a more refined and luxurious twist to Chinese cuisine through its popular concepts such as Lugang Café, Tuan Tuan Chinese Brasserie, and the decadent Xiu Cantonese; the group dedicates an entire concept solely on desserts. Despite not having a sweet tooth, I have to admit that I was pretty excited to try it out!

SAKURA WARABI (P168)

The Sakura Warabi builds on the fascination brought about by the delicacy and beauty of a raindrop cake by layering it with a light sakura flavor which gave off a pretty blush of pink. The dessert board comes with a contrast of textures and colors that add to its appeal. There’s the soft chewiness of the sakura rice balls, the sticky brown sugar paste, the sweet red beans, and the coarseness of the soy bean powder.

ICE STREAM RAMEN (P228)

If you’re looking for something refreshing and interesting to look at, the Ice Stream Ramen will definitely deliver! It’s a bowl filled with sweet mango cubes, and extremely juicy balls of sweet honeydew; paired with glassy gelatin noodles, and chewy rice balls. Top this off with its white peach sauce and you’re good to go!

TORI TORI

Tori Tori may be a small neighborhood hole-in-the-wall restaurant in San Juan but it definitely cooks up a sumptuous hefty feast for its diners. Don’t miss out on its Butabara which gives tremendous value-for-money, and its Japanese Wagyu cubes can rival those of Urameshiya’s and Izakaya Kikufuji’s!

BUTABARA (P45), BACON ENOKI (P60), DUCK MEAT TSUKENE (P80)

Get at least a stick of its Bacon Enoki; but feel free to skip its Duck Meat Tsukene. The latter is a stick filled with ground duck meat which didn’t really taste that palatable. Pair all these sticks with a combination of the garlic mayonnaise and spicy mayonnaise served on the table to achieve that perfect balance of salty, sweet and spicy tones.

BACON RICE (P100) and JAPANESE WAGYU (P125)

Don’t miss on its huge rice bowls which are great for sharing; the Bacon Rice comes with a generous serving of bacon pieces wonderfully glazed in a teriyaki sauce, while the Unagi Rice (P550) comes with a sizeable piece of eel that makes each peso spent for it worth it! If you wish for a change in taste, order a stick of Shishamo!

KANI SALAD (P95)

They also serve Kani Salad which features a nice bowl of crisp lettuce, corn, and crabstick pieces. The kitchen opts for the healthier sesame dressing rather than the typical Japanese mayonnaise. They also have Spicy Pork Ribs (P220), which takes a while to cook. Trust me, once you see its size and bite into its juicy perfectly charred meat; the cooking time would be justified.
