La Mere Poulard: French Fluffy Omelettes

A sneak into La Mere Poulard’s sophisticated and sleek dining interiors can be intimidating especially when coupled with the snooty perception that comes with French cuisine. However, the killer aroma coming from its open kitchen is all you need to forget about all of these qualms.

JUMBO SCALLOPS AND RATATOUILLE OMELETTE (P520)

Although the restaurant got its start from its butter cookies, it was their fluffy omelettes which served as the main draw for me to try the restaurant out. The restaurant actually serves a handful of omelette variants, most of which can come in a packaged set inclusive of an appetizer, a dessert and a drink of your choice. Unfortunately, the Jumbo Scallops and Ratatouille variant was only available ala carte. Nonetheless, it was a true beauty to behold. It was my first time eating eggs this fluffy that at times it felt like I’m eating egg in foam form. Odd, but delicious. It came with juicy grilled scallops and a killer ratatouille which made for a delightful combination. Amp up the flavor on this dish by adding a spoonful of their tasty Sauteed Garlic Mushrooms before taking each bite.

BACON AND POTATO OMELETTE (Part of the P850 set)

For my second visit, I opted to try the Bacon and Potato Omelette. At first glance, I was disappointed at the seemingly scrimpy serving of bacon. However, I was really surprised that each small piece packed in a whole lot of honey-cured smoky flavor. One piece can definitely go a long way!

POACHED LEEK IN VINAIGRETTE SAUCE (Part of the P850 set)

The Poached Leek in Vinaigrette Sauce wasn’t really our first choice as appetizer; however, as our first choice ran out in stock, we just settled with this. This appetizer turned out to be a surprise favorite. Not only did it come at a serving size suitable for sharing, the strong flavors of the vinaigrette serve as a nice palate re-charger in between bites of its more subdued-tasting main dishes. As the restaurant stayed true to its French roots, you can expect some of the dishes to be more subtle in flavor than what we’re accustomed to, so this is a must-have on the table.

TRADITIONAL ONION SOUP (Part of the P1200 set)

For solo dining, the Traditional Onion Soup would be a more suitable choice for appetizer. This is really comfort food at its finest. I would have wanted more bread served with it to be able to soak in all the hearty goodness brought about by the perfectly caramelized onions in the soup.

BABY SCALLOP AND TIGER PRAWN CREAMY RICE (P880)

La Mere Poulard’s Baby Scallop and Tiger Prawn Creamy Rice comes with a flashy price tag; but its use of premium ingredients justify the price range. Perfect as a meal-filler, this risotto-esque dish is hearty, and delicious.

BEEF TENDERLOIN TATAKI (Part of the P1200 set)

The Beef Tenderloin Tataki didn't only look good, and smelled heavenly as well! The beef was immensely tender and juicy and came in a tremendously light and tasty coriander-seasoned sauce. Who needs gravy when you have this sauce around?

BEEF CALDERETA IN BURGUNDY STYLE (P420)

The only reason why I ordered the Beef Caldereta was because it was recommended by Kris Aquino. Say what you want about her, but her power as an influencer is indomitable. Described as a ‘Burgundy-style’ caldereta, this beef stew came with marbled potatoes, shallots, peas, and carrots. I do agree that this dish serves as the perfect stepping stone for people who aren’t really into French cuisine to slowly warm up to it. There’s nothing really spectacular about it; however, one can't deny that it makes for a delicious and comforting beef stew (with insanely tender meat). It’s not a must-try; but I wouldn’t mind having it during a rainy day.

CARAMELIZED APPLE OMELETTE (P360)

La Mere Poulard also offers their fluffy omelettes in dessert versions so we opted to try the Caramelized Apple Omelette. Personally, I think the foaminess and the fluffiness of the omelette is better suited for desserts rather than main dishes. The airy texture of the omelette makes for a light dessert; while its blandness helps balance the sweet syrup-soaked apple wedges it was served with.

FRESH FRUIT SOUP, TEA AND GINGER SYRUP SAUCE (Part of the P850 set)

If you want something sweet that doubles as a palate cleanser, the Fresh Fruit Soup is a perfect choice. Cubed fruits such as dragonfruit and apples are served in a light sweet syrup laced with ginger syrup that will definitely serve as refreshment to your palate.

BOURBON VANILLA CRÈME BRULEE (Part of the P1200 set)

If you’re up for something with a kick, its Bourbon Vanilla Crème Brulee is generously laced with Grand Marnier for that post-dinner buzz. Its crème brulee comes with a silky smooth texture and a perfectly caramelized top.
