Fei-Fei Crab Restaurant: A Hole-In-The-Wall Crab Haven

Nothing makes a meal more perfect than to share it with extended family. Uncle Peter Soh and Auntie Guat Hua Soh may not be blood relatives of mine; but having maintained close friendly ties with my parents for over two decades automatically makes them family. Despite living in Singapore, the couple sweetly drove for hours to cross over the Malaysian border to spend time with my mom and I in Kuala Lumpur.

They originally planned to bring us to Lot 10; however, after discovering that my mom and I had dinner there just the night before, they decided to change plans to make our reunion dinner more special. After some phone calls with a few of their local friends, we took a lengthy drive to Fei Fei Crab Restaurant.

This family-run restaurant is a no-frills hole-in-the-wall restaurant that’s greatly popular with locals. Despite being crazily packed, we were fortunate to snag the last table available indoors. My Uncle Peter took charge of orders, and his choices definitely did not disappoint.

SALTED EGG CRAB

I’m not really a big fan of crab, but I was definitely intrigued by its unique crab sauces. The first one we sampled was the Salted Egg Crab. The meat of the crab was insanely sweet and juicy; attesting to its freshness. The restaurant exercised true restraint in tempering its salted egg sauce in a way that it does not overwhelm or overpower the sweetness of the crab. The sauce also made for a perfect pair with its steaming hot Mantou buns.

CLAYPOT KAM HEONG CRAB

The Claypot Kam Heong Crab gave a perfect contrast to the subtle sweetness of the Salted Egg Crab as it delivered a full-on in-your-face medley of spices and heat. It was actually a delight alternating between these two delicious variants.

THAI STYLE SOUR STEAM SEAFOOD

As I’ve said, I’m not really the biggest fan of crab, so the dish which won my heart was its Thai Style Sour Steam (sic) Seafood. This dish was a gigantic platter of steamed seafood (prawns, clams and squid) served in an unapologetic fiery hot Thai sauce. Despite having to arm myself with a glass of cold water and tissues for my runny nose after each bite of this dish, it was absolute love. Masochistic as it sounds, this dish is worth the pain of eating through it as it masterfully played up the strengths of each ingredient of that dish. Until this day, I dream about its perfect blend of the sweet, spicy and sour Thai sauce.
