Why Yeah! Yeah! Chinese Cuisine Deserves More Attention

Ever since King Bee closed down its doors along E. Rodriguez to move to its current spot in Fisher Mall, my siblings and I felt incomplete and crippled as our go-to Chinese comfort food within an arm’s length from our home was no longer available. Years after such heartbreak, the sight of Yeah! Yeah!’s teaser banner plastered on Hemady Square immediately captured our attention. Could this finally be the one to fill in the gap left by King Bee?

LECHON MACAU (P350)

Honestly, I had reservations about it because of its name. The “Yeah! Yeah” seemed too gaudy for me. In my mind, I pictured a kitschy hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. They could have opted for the more traditional “Yeye” which means grandfather in Chinese to make it sound more homey and in theme with Chinese cuisine.

This is why I was pleasantly surprised to see that its interiors reflected that of a modern Chinese restaurant. Clean and minimalist, it's actually more polished than your usual Mr. Choi Kitchen and Mann Hann outlets.

My family usually opts to start with some hot soup when dining in Chinese restaurants, shuffling between Hot and Sour Soup (P350) or the Seaweed with Seafood Soup (P360). Its Hot and Sour Soup is filling, but lacked in sourness. It was the Spinach with Seafood Soup that won us over with its clean clear broth. Each spoonful is guaranteed to be meaty as the soup is generously filled with chunks of shrimp, squid and fish fillets. Unfortunately, Yeah! Yeah! doesn't serve individual servings of their soup; but personally, I wouldn’t say no to a second serving of the Spinach with Seafood Soup. It's easily my top pick in the Metro for this dish.

SHRIMP RICE ROLL (P160) and CRYSTAL HAKAW (P138)

Its dimsum is stellar. Not a lot of Chinese restaurants serve Shrimp Rice Rolls, so I was really happy that theirs is a trusty and dependable version. However, what completely blew me away was their Crystal Hakaw and their Crab Roe Siomai (P120) as each piece boasts of large shrimp pieces that guarantee immense value for your money. Pair these with their in-house chili and you’re good to go!

ROASTED DUCK (P450)

An order of their Roasted Duck comes with a family-sized serving of beautiful, succulent and tasty duck meat. Armed with crisp glistening skin, and tender sweet meat, you won’t be looking around for sauce to pair this up with anymore.

Another winner from their roasted meat selection would be its Lechon Macau. I’ve ordered this dish so many times from them already and so far, the skin consistently comes with a to-die-for crunch. Pair it with their simple yet elegantly plated Broccoli with Garlic (P300) for a balanced meal.

SI CHUAN STYLE FISH FILLET IN SPICY SAUCE

The Si Chuan Style Fish Fillet in Spicy Sauce took a few bites before I warmed up to the dish. Its subtle but clever mastery of the chili oil is most evident when drizzled over its tasty Yang Chow Fried Rice. A little garnish on top seals each bite with perfection!

PIGGY SALTED EGG YOLK BAO (P130)

I was really looking forward to having their Piggy Salted Egg Yolk Bao. Not only were they incredibly cute, but I’ve been on the hunt for delicious salted egg yolk baos for years. The bao was excellently made (I honestly won’t mind eating a plain one and dipping it in some condensed milk, mantou-style); however, the salted egg yolk lava inside it simply tasted off. It was too sweet, and tasted a bit artificial. To be honest, this has been the only dish that I didn’t enjoy in all my visits to Yeah! Yeah!

Overall, I loved everything about Yeah! Yeah! Its food comes at reasonable prices and large servings; where quality is definitely given importance. An added bonus is that they’re pretty generous when it comes to power outlets so if you’re looking for a charging station or a working venue, why not swap your usual lattes for some dimsum for a change? I definitely can't wait to try out more of its dishes!
