Soru Izakaya: A Gallery of Breathtaking Maki Portraits
KANI SHURIKEN MAKI (P490)
There are mainly two reasons why I really wanted to try Soru Izakaya. The first would be to see its maki masterpieces up close. The restaurant prides on creating breathtaking portraits through the plating of its makis, which consistently make their rounds on social media due to their Instagram-worthiness. The second would be that it’s still remains a Zomato Gold 1+1 partner (as of this writing); which guarantees an affordable feast ahead especially for those dining in groups.
TORI KARAAGE (P220)
Its Tori Karaage delivered on crunch and flavor; as each juicy bite is accented by a light sprinkle of nori. What sets it apart would be the melted cheese it came topped with; which ultimately was an unnecessary addition for me as the chicken bites were already delicious on their own. The Ebi and Kani Popcorn (P290) serves as another fool-proof choice when shared in a group. The sauce the deep fried balls came with was simply addicting.
KURO DRAGON MAKI (P490)
Now to the main attraction of Soru Izakaya, its beautiful maki art. From its vibrant colors and the use of bold, precise strokes, each platter commands attention; and boy, would you give it freely. There will always be that hint of hesitation in being the first one to ruin the plating; but once you get into it...the anticipation built up falls a bit flat. The majestic Kuro Dragon Maki contained unagi slices and asparagus pieces which were wrapped in soft cream cheese and topped with Japanese mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce; while the eccentric Kani Shuriken Maki makes use of deep fried crunchy kani to serve as the topping to its kani and cheese filled rolls. Ultimately, the makis were filling and satisfying; but was just okay taste-wise. It’s not bad, but it wasn’t spectacular.
UDON CARBONARA (P340)
Fortunately, its makis only fill up a mere page on their menu which features a little bit of everything. A personal favorite would be the Udon Carbonara. Uni, salmon and shiitake mushrooms are whipped in a thick cream sauce and topped with ebiko and parmesan cheese. The noodle dish is faintly laced with wasabi; but as someone who isn’t a fan of the condiment, I didn’t mind it at all. I’ll definitely come back to Soru Izakaya solely to order this again.
SAIKORO WAGYU CUBES TEPPAN (P490)
I haven’t stepped into Kikufuji for so long but fortunately wagyu cubes have become more accessible thanks to other restaurants quickly adding them in their menu lineup. Soru’s Saikoro Wagyu Cubes Teppan may not have the best quality out there; but it definitely gives you value for money.
BEEF SUKIYAKI (P390)
Traditional Japanese staples such as the Beef Sukiyaki can also be found in its menu. Expect a bowl of its sweet soy-mirin based broth with mushrooms, tofu, crunchy vegetables and glass noodles with no fuss and frills. This is perfect for sharing especially as the nights are getting more chilly.
