Delivery Snippets: Salmon HQ x Roasted Duck Express x Spice Bird

SALMON HQ

I’m a huge fan of Salmon Sashimi and thanks to my sister’s discovery of Salmon HQ, we’ve been treating ourselves to top-tier quality salmon sashimi throughout this never-ending lockdown. I’ve honestly never had a less-than-stellar experience from Salmon HQ. Obviously, sashimi is ideally eaten as fresh as possible, but at times, we do get a bit too much that we’d have to store the leftovers in the refrigerator overnight. Despite this though, its quality still easily beats out those you get from Japanese restaurants and hotel buffets. P450 gets you a fresh tub of 300g Salmon already!

INARI (P300 to P750 for 3 pieces)

Its inari is also noteworthy. Salmon HQ sells these famous tofu pockets in sets of three. Variants such as the Kani Salad, Tuna Shoyu, Salmon Miso, Spicy Tuna, and Spicy Salmon are priced at P300/set. Its Ikura and Uni Inari set though is priced at P750 if you’re feeling a little bit indulgent. Unsurprisingly, its raw ingredients were beyond fresh and delicious: from its tuna to its clean-tasting uni and its large Ikura (salmon roe) which delightfully pop in your mouth. Honestly, it’s the closest thing to Tsukiji Market that's available here.

ROASTED DUCK EXPRESS

A Peking Duck is always a welcome addition to the dining table but is typically reserved for special occasions due to its hefty price tag and its large serving size. Enter: Roasted Duck Express. One thing that blew my mind is that Roasted Duck Express offers an array of the beloved duck in smaller portions. Sure, you can still get an entire duck for sharing, but they also have smaller sets and even solo servings available.

ROASTED DUCK PANCAKE FOR 4 (P529) and SALT AND PEPPER DUCK – SOLO (P299)

Apart from its flexible serving sizes, its duck dishes also come at wallet-friendly price tags. A set for 4 comes priced at P529 and includes the duck wrapper, sauces and fresh toppings of cucumber and leeks already. Expectedly, the duck they use is the smaller variant; but it unquestionably delivers on taste and would definitely cure any Peking Duck craving. Roasted Duck Express also conveniently offers different ‘ways’ of the duck – typically only available in Chinese restaurants if you order the entire duck. A family favorite – the Salt and Pepper Duck’s solo serving comes at a P299 price tag and is good enough for sharing. Since the duck they use is small, the meat-to-bone ratio is significantly smaller as compared to enjoying this 'way' at restaurants like the Peking Garden; but again, they don’t skimp on flavor despite its smaller (but immensely cheaper) offering!

SPICE BIRD

Spice Bird has to be one of my favorite restaurants in Boracay. Spice Bird's menu contains a selection of piri-piri favorites, but its house specialty is its Chicken. It conveniently serves its mains in individual boards which include a cup of its fragrant Spice rice, a side salad, a handful of veggie chips and its milky bread roll.

Fortunately, it recently established a stall at The Grid in Powerplant Mall, and is accessible via Grabfood and The Grid’s in-house delivery website. When it first opened last year, I quickly ordered a platter of its chicken; but unfortunately, the travel time from Makati to Quezon City rendered the chicken meat too dry for my liking. Thus, I decided, it’s best to order Spice Bird for an office lunch, as the distance is shortened to Makati to Ortigas, Pasig City. Indeed, the shorter travel time ensured that the juices of the meat were intact, making it immensely better.

One thing I miss is the unlimited sauces you can dress your meats with when dining in the restaurant. Ordering it via delivery limits you to choose only one among its many droolworthy sauces for every quarter chicken board you order. A personal favorite sauce is the Garlic and Lime, but you can’t go wrong with any variant! On its own, the chicken is pretty tasty but it won’t really be so different from those served by other piri piri concepts. It’s really the sauces and its sulit personal boards which elevate it to a memorable meal.
