THOMSON ROAD KITCHEN

As my favorite laksa purveyor, Happy Mrs Laksa is still on a hiatus (still kilig though that she ‘opened’ up her kitchen to serve me her laksa during my 30th birthday celebration earlier this year), I was desperate to look for the next best thing. I’ve been seeing tempting Facebook ads from Thomson Road Kitchen boasting of their Laksa Home Kits (that has a glowing review from Esquire) and their Jumbo Shrimp Siomai that I decided to give it a try.

LAKSA KIT (P580)

A Laksa Kit comes in a serving size meant to be shared by 2 to 3 pax; and comes complete with coconut cream, laksa paste, noodles, assorted seafood balls, and easy-to-follow instructions. It definitely nailed the look and aroma of the laksa, but it’s simply too bland for me. The seafood balls that the kit came with are undeniably tasty, but these can easily be procured from Chinese specialty shops. It was an absolute letdown.

JUMBO SHRIMP SIOMAI (P580)

Another menu highlight of Thomson Road Kitchen would be its Jumbo Shrimp Siomai. Coming with a whopping P72.5 price tag/piece and the fact that it always sells out, I had extremely high expectations for this. Thus, one bite into it and I was flooded with extreme disappointment. Yes, each siomai was indeed topped with a relatively large piece of shrimp, but it definitely did not deliver on flavor. Food stall siomai's can easily beat theirs anytime.

PAMPAGUENO PORK SISIG (P270)

As I wanted to save on shipping fees especially as Thomson Road Kitchen delivers from the South, I decided to order its frozen Pampagueno Pork Sisig as a filler. Surprisingly, this last-minute addition was the only thing I truly enjoyed from the restaurant. It’s definitely not the best sisig out there (not even close), but it’s a decent and tasty rendition of the classic dish.

SWAGAT INDIAN CUISINE

Back when I was in BPI Corporate Banking, Swagat Indian Cuisine served as a dependable hole-in-the-wall that made Indian food accessible and affordable as a workday lunch or after-work dinner. It’s been years since I ate there that it slowly disappeared from my radar until I saw its ad on Facebook advertising solo lunch sets that come packaged with an appetizer, a main dish with rice and a soft drink can.

COMBO 1 (P399) WITH LASSI (P75)

Combo 1 came with Vegetable Samosas (complete with mint and chutney sauces), Chicken Tikka Masala and a large cup of rice. I set aside my can of Coke and decided to complete my meal with some traditional sweet Lassi. The Samosas were stuffed with tasty filling and paired perfectly with the mint and chutney sauces; unfortunately, the supposed highlight of the meal, the Chicken Tikka Masala, was simply a hot mess. The sauce was watery and its flavor was immensely watered down. It ended up being a chore to finish it.

FOWLBREAD

If you’re looking for meat-less alternatives, Fowlbread’s Scam Chicken Sandwich should definitely be on your list. The restaurant is careful to note though that this isn’t vegan-friendly as they use the same fryers for their chicken sandwich.

SCAM CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH FRIES AND ICED TEA (P379)

Made from tofu, this Scam Chicken Sandwich gets the same loving preparation as Fowlbread’s signature fried chicken sandwiches. Visually, it’s unmistakably not chicken but a blind taste test may actually trick you in thinking it is! Paired with crunchy pickles and thick crunchy fries, it makes for a substantial meal! It cheekily adds a crispy tofu cracker as a replacement to fried chicken skin! A solo order comes at P260 but if paired with fries and Lowbrow’s deliciously brewed iced tea will come with a P379 price tag.
