Greyhound Café: What to Order When It's on 50% Off

Greyhound Café unapologetically serves modern Thai food that’s far from traditional. Its eclectic decors are loud and quirky and are supplemented by its expansive menu that offers drinks, cocktails and desserts that go beyond what you expect from a Thai restaurant.

Greyhound Cafe’s overall vibe comes with its loud personality – but unfortunately, this is mirrored by the less-than-warm and less-than-efficient service I’ve experienced across its various branches – SM Aura, Robinsons Magnolia and The Podium.

The best thing in its menu is undoubtedly its Famous Chicken Wings – feast on one of the tastiest wings you’d ever chew on – its thin skin is guaranteed to be crispy, and its Thai Fish Sauce marinade will keep you coming back for more.

Unfortunately, there are times when this house specialty is unavailable – so we had to opt for the Thai Pop appetizer instead – these deep-fried bite-sized chicken pieces are definitely easier to eat than the wings, but heavily rely on the dips they come with for flavor.

I absolutely adore Thai sauces- especially when they perfectly blend sweetness, tanginess and spice – and that’s what you find in Greyhound’s Larb Salmon Thai North Eastern Style. This interesting appetizer encourages you to wrap the fresh salmon slices inside fresh greens ala samgyup or ssam style.

Greyhound’s menu items can command a steep price tag, but a number of them are meant for sharing (which makes it easier on the wallet)!. Such was the case for its Tom Yum Super Bowl – which features an enormous Tom Yum bowl filled with scallops, black mussels, squid, tiger prawns and mushrooms. My only complaint was that it used Mama Instant noodles – with a bowl that expensive, I expect better quality noodles to be served in my bowl.

Its Crispy Pork Knuckle is essentially your typical crispy pata which trades in your classic toyomansi for tamarind chili paste and Jaew sauce; and your garlic rice for sticky rice. Definitely, not worth the price tag but it’s Crispy Pata done right. Skin is crisp, meat is tender and the sauces form a party in your mouth!
Overall though, its prices are too expensive for food items that are just alright - so a personal rule of mine is to only dine in Greyhound if it has an ongoing 50% off promotion with a credit card unless I’m just there for coffee and/or dessert. This will definitely reduce the chances of disappointment when dining at Greyhound!
