Raan Jay Fai: Is It Worth Queueing For?

Raan Jay Fai is undoubtedly one of the most popular dining spots in Bangkok – but it’s notoriously known for its killer lines that third-party providers actually provide a paid ‘queuing’ service!

When we got there, we got a bit confused as we didn’t know how to ‘queue’ – there was just a long line snaking its way outside the eatery which we just unquestionably followed. It was HOT even if we opted to start queueing at 5:40pm so that the sun’s heat has waned.

The eatery has no air-conditioning and is simple as you can get – it feels like an eatery in Banawe or Binondo actually. This humble setup is actually more evident with its literal open kitchen where you can see Chef Jay Fai hard at work behind a wok!

We were fortunate enough to get one of the last remaining ‘slots’ – but this meant queuing under the sun – while standing up for two long hours. Across the street was a convenience store which I’m sure makes a killing as no one can endure that queue without a cold drink purchased from them. Make sure to finish this drink though as Raan Jay Fai strictly does not allow outside food and drinks! Don’t worry, drinks offered in Raan Jay Fai are friendly on the wallet.

To help facilitate the queue to move more efficiently, at around an hour in, they start asking for your table’s orders. We had to get creative with how best to ‘split’ our dishes as the best the restaurant can do to accommodate our table of 6 is to split us in tables of 3.

CRAB MEAT OMELETTE (THB1000)
Of course, we ordered a Crab Meat Omelette per table. Eyebrows were definitely raised when we saw how much it costed – but this was the trademark dish of Raan Jay Fai – we had to get it.

An assortment of hot sauces and condiments are placed on the table – but you’d have no need for it. Once you open the omelette, the high price tag makes sense as you see the sizeable chunks of actual crab meat. Served straight from the pan, this fiery hot dish will definitely satiate our hungry stomachs. The crab meat was fresh and cooked to absolute perfection.

PHAD KEE MAO (THB 600)
We paired our omelettes with heftier dishes such as the Phad Kee Mao or Drunken Noodles. I love the chew and color on the stir-fried noodles. It’s served with your choice of seafood or plump shrimps as the noodles are bathed in a spicy sauce and fresh chili. This was incredibly spicy but lacked in the wok hei flavor that I expected. You can skip on this already.

POO PHAD (THB2000)
The Poo Phad or Yellow Curry was even pricier than the famed omelette; but it was a delight to eat – it’s stir-fried crab meat cooked in a delicious yellow curry layered with gloriously fluffy egg and onions!

The verdict? Raan Jay Fai is worth going to once in your life – just ensure you have a cold drink at hand + a pocket fan and a whole lot of patience. Admittedly, I’m sure you can get the same caliber of food elsewhere – but there’s something about dining in an institution built on passion – all dishes are cooked singlehandedly by Chef Jay Fai – and that is an experience that makes it worth queuing for (but maybe NOT for a second time anymore).
